CHAPTER SEVEN

Their pace was quick and for the first ten minutes or so, they made good time, only running into a handful of zombies and putting them down briskly with simple headshots.

“I have not faced a giant, let alone two,” Akila admitted after a bit.

“Well the rules of fighting them are pretty much the same as all the others: don’t let them get close enough to grab you,” Cait replied.

“Hmm.”

David had to admit, he was fucking worried. He’d only ever faced a single giant in recent memory, and that was with Ellie. And they had gotten lucky then. It had come at them up a hill, and they had managed to get enough shots into it that it had died. They were big, big fucking mean bastards: goliaths that had been turned by the new virus. They were terrifying. The idea of facing more than one of the big sons of bitches turned his stomach. But he had backup at least. As they walked on, he couldn’t help but want to talk about something.

“Akila,” he said.

“Yes?” she replied.

“I was curious...what’s life like as a nymph? I mean, no one I’ve talked to actually knows what you do in the forest all day.”

“That is as we prefer it, largely,” Akila replied. She seemed reluctant to divulge anything, even something as simple as a daily routine, then she sighed. “But again I suppose it does not matter. I am the only one left.”

“Are you sure?” Cait asked quietly.

“I have not seen a single other of my kind in two months. I am fairly positive that none from my clan still endure. I will be happy to be wrong, but I do not think I am.” She went silent for a second, then continued. “As for what we did, day-to-day? It is not a great enigma. We survived. We explored the forests, we made simple things, we hunted for food, we found places to sleep, we talked and laughed. We slept and hunted and ate, mostly. It was...a simple existence. We enjoyed each other’s company,” she explained.

“It sounds like the last two months were lonely...I’m sorry,” David said.

“It was...difficult to endure,” she admitted.

“Did you ever consider coming to speak with one of us? It seemed as if you left it until the very last second to finally come to us,” Lara asked.

“I had considered it, but traditionally, contact with outsiders, especially humans, has not gone well for my kind.”

“I’m sorry,” Cait said.

“I am glad to say that you all have proven to be very companionable. I have enjoyed the time we’ve spent together.”

“Even the fighting?” David asked.

“Especially. I am good at fighting. It was what I trained for. I was a defender of my clan. But fighting alone is...not preferable to fighting with skilled allies. It has been a welcome return,” she replied.

“Oh, yeah, I can appreciate that. Well, I’m glad to be fighting alongside you as well,” he said. Akila hesitated, an uncertain look passing across her face.

“You look like you want to ask something,” Cait said.
